Your Employees Shouldn’t Need HR for Every Routine Request

Employee self-service is not about giving employees another portal. It is about removing unnecessary dependence on HR for things employees should be able to do themselves.

Employee expectations have moved

SHRM’s 2026 State of the Workplace found that 72% of HR professionals believe workers have higher expectations of employers today, and employee experience is one of the top priorities workers want HR to address in 2026.

That does not mean every employee conversation should become self-service. Some of the most important HR moments need a person. Routine transactions are different.

The hidden cost of making HR the help desk

“Where is my document?” “How many leaves do I have?” “Has my request been approved?” “How do I submit an expense?” Each request is small. The accumulation is not.

A July 2026 MiHCM survey of 1,000 UK employees at organizations with more than 2,000 staff reported that a quarter of employees self-served very little - completing only 0-25% of their HR needs independently - while only around one in five felt they could self-serve almost everything.

That is vendor research, not a universal benchmark. But it highlights a useful point: simply owning a self-service portal does not mean employees can actually complete what they need without help.

Self-service should mean more than a leave button

A useful employee experience covers the everyday journey: personal information, documents, leave, attendance, expenses, requests, approvals and support. It also needs to work for people who are moving between locations or working away from a laptop.

What RightlyHR puts in employees’ hands

RightlyHR Employee Self Service brings together personal information, documents, leave and attendance, expenses, requests, support and approval tracking. Its mobile experience extends those services to attendance, leave, timesheets, expenses, documents, approvals and helpdesk access.

The better success metric

An employee portal can look modern and still generate the same work behind the scenes. A better measure is operational: Did the employee get the information without contacting HR? Did the request follow the right approval path? Was the record updated without someone re-entering it?

That is when self-service stops being a website feature and starts becoming an operating-model change.

Keep human support where it matters

Self-service should make HR more available, not less. When routine transactions move out of the queue, HR has more capacity for sensitive cases, workforce planning, manager support and employee conversations that actually benefit from a human response.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Good employee self-service does not push HR away from employees. It removes unnecessary transaction work so HR can be more available for the moments that actually need human attention.
